Familia Mayol Cuatro Primos 2012

Familia Mayol has been one of my wineries for a few years.  I had a 2009 bottle in September 2012.  How do I remember this?  Wine apps like Vivino and Delectable make it easy to retrace your steps.

I recently had the 2012 after a Sunday Funday with a friend.  The Fainting Goat in DC has half priced bottles of wine on Sundays after 5pm.  I immediately spotted this blend and knew it would be the perfect finish to a lovely day.  It's a great wine that isn't trying too hard and isn't too pricey.

Familia Mayol is a labor of love.  The vineyards have been worked by the same family for generations.  The family acquired more land in which to grow and were widely recognized as a top grape producer for wineries.  Matías Mayol pursued his own path in learning more about wine around the globe returning home to establish his family as not just a top producer of grapes, but building a winery as well.

The 2012 vintage is a blend 50% Malbec, 35% Syrah, 10% Bonarda and 5% Petit Verdot sourced from Uco Valley.  It was a little tight at first and needed to breathe.  As it evolved, I noticed some smokey notes.  The palate was big and welcoming with some cassis and dark fruit.  It clearly can be enjoyed now, but may benefit from some cellaring.
